Dynasty Continueth

For the third time in four years, First St. Paul's won the Hastings Youth Fellowships' Dodgeball Tournament defeating 2006 Champion, Faith Lutheran, in the final.
In an extra game the coed FSPL team soundly defeated the Refs (a team made up of all male college students). One ref commented after the drubbing, "Man, those kids are good."
Carrie Hohlen recieved the most improved player award. After dropping two easy catches early in the tournament, Carrie caught four balls late in the contest to lead her team to victory.
Captain Brock Drudik explained his teams dominance, "Yeah. We're amazing."

The Dynasty Returneth

First St. Paul's youth participated in the third annual city-wide youth dodgeball tournament this past Sunday at the PFF at Hastings College - and DOMINATED. The other teams cowered in fear and loathing as First St. Paul's youth relentlessly pummeled the competition - in the spirit of Christian love and unity!
First St. Paul's sent two teams, each consisting of young women and men, with three of each on the court at once. Both teams went undefeated for the entire tournament until they faced each other in the Championship round. Both FSP teams waited at their back line for the opening rush, anticipating the signal to begin. At the booming shout of "Dodgeball!", both teams ran to the center line... and stopped. Dropping their dodgeballs to the hard gym floor, the two teams of young Lutherans shook hands, embraced, and congratulated one another for a job well done while the onlookers watched in mixed confusion and hilarity.
It was a moment of pride for Lutheran unity as the two teams walked back to their starting line to begin the match... until one young man who will remain nameless nailed an opponent in the back -- it was on! It was a hard fought battle, as the two teams would split the first two matches to go into the third and final match of the best-out-of-three championship round with one win. Teeth gritted, dodgeballs flew, and onlookers looked on awesomeness unfolded in front of their very eyes.
As Hastings church youth dodged ducked dipped dived and dodged - in celebration of our Lord and Savior - the overall spirit was one to be celebrated. First St. Paul's is excited, and avidly awaits defending the title next year!

Students Survive Hunger Strike

Thirty hours without food? Are you nuts? At least a dozen students survived the thirty hour famine in the Christian Underground last week. Students learned about hunger...and got a taste of what it means to be hungry. Participants also slept in boxes outdoor (until it started raining), gathered over 200 food items for donation to the local food pantry, and completed dozens of challenges and games.
Organizer Justin Remmers was pleased with the event aside from his displeasure with Associate Pastor Adam White, who couldn't be at the entire event because his wife had a baby the morning before the event.
Kudos and thanks to all who sponored, planned, or participated in this one!!

Soul Café to go to Madame F

No, that's not the grade on anybody's latest math test (Except for maybe Adam's). Soul Cafe will be headin' out this Wednesday, April 5th, to see a production of Madame F at Hastings College. A one woman show centered on the Holocaust, the woman performers parents were survivors of Auschwitz during WWII. The youth will hear their stories and more. This promises to be an amazing and life-changing experience that youth are encouraged to attend!

Transportation for this event will be provided. The show starts at 7:30, and vans will leave at 7:20 from First St. Paul's. I know this cuts in to the Lenten Services! Youth are encouraged to attend the Lenten Service as well, as a second van will leave First St. Paul's shortly following the Lenten Service.

Web News

Guess what! The website just got more useful! Starting this week, check out the "Worship Services" page on the main site for references to the weeks scripture reading, as well as special notes about the upcoming services, sermons, and whatnot. Also, check out the "Ministries" Page for a list of the ministries offered here at or by First St. Paul's Lutheran Church. And get involved! Each ministry should have contact information for the people or person in charge, give 'em a ring and show 'em that the Youth here care and want to help!
Oh, one more thing! Check out the bottom of the main youth site in a new article called "Music" for links to all the bands that have come to the Christian Underground! Read about 'em, check out a demo or two, and support 'em!
That's all for this update, but stay tuned for more!

Ski '06

It was a chilly Nebraska morning in the middle of February when 33.5 souls boarded an Arrow stage lines bus—powered by Daryl—with the destination of Keystone, CO. No one could have imagined the journey that lay ahead. Who would have predicted that Ali Jo would safely make it down the mountain more than once precariously bound to her snowboard? Who would have guessed that Colan and Nolter (a.k.a. Nolan and Colter) would emerge from their journey off the beaten path? Who would have thought that the freshman girls from A.C. would have been so strongly reprimanded by the Front Desk? Who could have answered the profound mystery “what is roast beef made out of…pig?” Who could have fathomed that Silas’ favorite thing to do as the Mascot was to scratch his itching shoulder? How could we have known the great fear that a few choice pictures would strike into the heart of Sherri? How could we have prophesied that the four-inch rule would be transgressed right in front of Adam…at dinner nonetheless? How did it come to pass that the Rockie mountain oysters disappeared so quickly? Alas, how could we have foreseen any of this? And so it was; the great journey of Ski '06 “Mission Possible.”

Dodgeball Tourney

First St. Paul's teens embarked on a mission of epic proportions -- Defending their Dodgeball Championship Title. The teens competed this past Sunday in what history will see as the hardest fought and, hardest lost battle of all times. Our Teens were valiant, brave, and courageous. They dodged with vigilance, ducked with bravado, dipped with arrogance, and threw with the strength of an ox, the eyes of an eagle, and the speed of the mighty cheetah.
But, this was not enough to overcome their foes. As the teens were the hardest hitters, they were also the hardest fallers. The other teams would prove triumphant in our too-often closely-matched matches.
The teens will train. They will dodge, duck, dip, dive, and dodge their way to victory once more.
Hold your heads High, O mighty Dodgeballers of First St. Paul's. Your Time will Come Again.

Making their WORLD DEBUT, 7$Slap (Seven Dollar Slap) opened for RedFlecks. This group of three crazy crazy Hastings College Kids put on a great show, warming up the crowd to the intense female vocals and driving bass of RedFlecks.
'Slap's cover of "Punk Rawk Princess" is sure put them on the map! We look forward to seeing both of these bands come through again!

Llama Plop

John and Patty Boltz are the winners of the first ever Llama Plop!! Shortly before 2:00 p.m. the Llama’s bowels opened sending forth a shower of…well…llama droppings. The remaining eyewitnesses believed that the Boltz family was aided in victory by the heavily “seeded” neighboring plot owned by the Remmers’ family.

The Fairbury franks, donated by Russ’s were the only tasteful part of the event. In addition to waiting for a llama’s bowel movement event planners sold bags of llama droppings to “seed” plots. The youth raised over $600 through this event. The Youth and Family Ministries committee especially thanks John Martin and Tim Grothen for the food and llama respectively. Thanks to all who participated.

Soul Cafe gets a little bit of culture

On Wednesday, September 21st, Soul Cafe travelled to Hastings College to check out African Phoenix ensemble.

The youth rocked out to traditional yet intense zulu songs and chants performed without any accompaniment save for drums, maraccas, and vocals. The dancing was intense, demonstrating an incredible amount of skill in acrobatics and flexibility while keeping speed with a complexly dynamic and intense tempo. The downbeat changed for effect... and it was felt. The entire presentation was powerful as the audience was left awe-stricken to a standing ovation just before the performers sang the South African National Anthem.

African Phoenix travels with the intent for educational outreach to the United States to combat various issues such as rascism, stating that "So what, our skin is different. Inside, we're all the same," to raise HIV/AIDS awareness, and to expose American's to another culture. With stories of tribal war and nation-based genocide plaguing the headlines of the American Media through the 90's and early 2000's (Think Rwanda, Darfur), many American's have a single, pointed view of Africa.

1 Cor. 12:12-13 (NIV) states "The body is a unit, though it is made up of many parts; and though all its parts are many, they form one body. So it is with Christ. For we were all baptized by one Spirit into one body -- whether Jews or Greeks, (African or Caucasian), slave or free -- and we were all given the one Spirit to drink." In the spirit of this passage and of our common baptism, we welcome the African Phoenix ensemble and thank them for their ministry to the Body of Christ and to the world.

Llama Plop

Watch your step on the afternoon of Sunday, September 25th. The youth will be sponsoring a “Llama Plop” to help raise funds for our youth’s trips over the next year. Details are still being finalized, but we guarantee that this fundraiser will stink. What’s a llama plop? We will “sell” small plots of land to persons or families. The Llama will be set loose to “go” where it pleases. If it chooses your parcel of land you will win a prize. Keep watching www.firststpauls.org for details, and get ready to “buy” a plot for your chance to win.

Soul Cafe gets Soaked at Pool Party

Soul Cafe left the edgy calm and safety of the Christian Underground on August 31st and headed for someplace a little... wetter.
David and Deb Stuehrenberg's backyard pool party for Soul Cafe was a blast! The event started off on the right foot with a diving board belly flop contest initiated by the slightly daffy yet always swank youth pastor, Adam White. Adam's front-side was, needless to say, tomato red after his first attempt.
The temperature outside was a little chilly, but it fit in well with the ice cream, brownies and soda offered up for supper. The brownies were delectable, and the ambrosial essence of the vanilla ice cream with silky smooth chocolate syrup put one's taste buds all in a twitter. That food was Gooooooood.
All in all, the event was a huge success and certainly one we hope to have again in the future.

Special thanks to Dave and Deb for offering their service to the youth, as well as to all sponsors in attendance.

Rock + Hop + Roll Review

On August 19, 2005 the Rock + Hop + Roll Tour rolled into Hastings Nebraska. Red Umbrella began the night with their melodic, piano-driven rock. The group, having inspired comparisons to Coldplay, U2, and the Beatles, played a killer set warming up the Nebraska crowd of 150. After a short break, rapper Playdough took the stage. Playdough, an original member of Ill Harmonics—a group that took the runner-up place in MTV’s 2001 show “The Cut”—had the crowd eating out of his hand. His Texas charm and slick rhyming converted most of the assembly to bouncing, screaming fans. Sevenglory, making their second appearance at FSP’s, closed the night with their original vocally driven pop-rock. Highlighting their set were “This Time”, “Really Free”, and a spirited rendition of the old-time classic “I’ll Fly Away”.

An additional highlight of the evening that took center-stage was the newly renovated (and almost completed) “Christian Underground”. The room, complete with graffiti art by Tyson Davison, and a permanent stage built by Josh Marcus—and some local firefighters, served as a perfect venue for the tour. With drums, guitars, amplifiers, and musicians on stage, the once drab and stark basement was transformed into a first rate concert hall.

The event inspired a sense of ecumenical unity in all who attended. Glory was given to God, and a year full of possibility was begun.

Fall Kickoff

The youth committee, Platte Valley Youth for Christ and others are partnering to bring in the Rock, Hop, and Roll Tour to Hastings in August. The tour features Sevenglory, Red Umbrella, Playdough, and a yet to be named local artist. The concert will kickoff city-wide fall semester youth ministry programming.
The concert will be held in the basement of the First St. Paul's new edition--i.e. the new youth room. Over the next few months we need to paint the room, and prep it for the concert. Watch this website for painting times and updates. See www.rockhopandroll.com for artist links and information.

Seth Pinkerman wins

Wednesday night (a.k.a Soul Cafe Senior Appreciation Night) was the occasion for the greatest battle of the intellect humankind has ever witnessed.
Seth Pinkerman, Kelly Mohlman, and Whitney Flohrs faced a panel of current college students who asked them questions only college students ought to know. The battle was intense--there were five lead changes, seven ties, and a earth-shaking final round.
After the rubble cleared, Pinkerman had the crown. "Wow...that was crazy," one onlooker commented.
